October 15th: Feast Day of St. Teresa of Avila
Today is the Feast Day of St. Teresa of Avila and on our website I have added a page about St. Teresa and on YouTube I have added a playlist of related videos which can be used as part of a short reflection or meditation about her life: St Teresa of Avila YouTube Playlist
On the website I have added numerous resources, links, YouTube links etc on Food & Hunger, Poverty & People Trafficking to mark the next three days in the calendar. These topics like lots of the calendar resources can be used at any time in the year and may link well with TY or Senior Cycle modules:
10×10 website
This website presents the words and images that are trending on news sites across the world in real time. Every hour of every day the site collects the most popular 100 words and 100 images based on feeds from the likes of ABC, Reuters and the BBC. These words and images are presented as a single image made up of 10×10 smaller images. You can then click on individual windows to read more about the story or get information behind the keyword or image.
How to use 10×10 in the R.E. classroom (supporting literacy)
- Display 10×10 on your whiteboard as a starting point for discussion and focus and select a number of the words and have students in pairs discuss how these words reflect the world they live in.
- Get students to select one of the words that may be linked to justice/injustice/war etc and to write a short piece of creative writing using just the word and image as inspiration.
- As part of a creative homework task, ask your students to follow the 10×10 page at the same time every day for a week. Get them to look for patterns and to investigate if there are certain themes developing which relate to justice issues.
- Have students read some of the main events in the Bible and construct their own version of 10×10 using suitable images and words.
